What is a Transponder Key?

When a car key is turned in the ignition, the engine control unit (ECU) in the car sends an electronic message through to the key. As-long as the key has been programmed to that car it will start up. The immobilizer warning light turns on if your anti-theft system does not recognize the car key being used, if it's the wrong key or low on battery.

How to you know if your car uses a Transponder Key?

Most cars from approx 1998 use a transponder key system, you might see a sticker on the window of a key/padlock, a flashing red light on the dash or a light when you turn the key on that goes out after a second or two like the images below.
